Amplifying voices through social media

This campaign was an online platform created to amplify the voices of young people who feel like they are not heard in their society. Using a trilingual (Dutch, French, German) approach and focusing on inclusion and shared values, the YOU-nite team took the the streets of Belgium to hear young people's ideas and initiatives for a better Belgian society. In Antwerp, Ghent, Leuven, Brussels, and Mechelen, the team recorded and filmed the perspectives of the people they met, and shared those opinions on social media to spark conversations about diversity and inclusion.

Encouraging news literacy and critical analysis

The focus of this campaign was on challenging extremism by encouraging people to fact check the articles and websites they read, because the team from Vesalius College found that extremist websites and communications regularly distorted facts or took them out of context. The Newsworthy campaign provided source verified news articles, trainings on highlighting fallacies, and used social media to reach a wide audience with tips on how to become critical consumers of content.

NGO Trainings

Counterspeech is more effective when it comes from a credible speaker. This is why it’s so important to have the right messenger — someone who is local and part of the community and the conversation.

Over the past two years, Facebook has hosted training sessions focused on counterspeech narrative, marketing, and communication. We have shared insights and best practices with NGOs working on counterspeech, helping them reach and engage their audiences in positive ways.

To date, we have trained hundreds of civil society groups across the US and Europe and we plan to expand to other regions around the world.

Learning effective counterspeech communication

This training focused on the basics of effective communication and marketing. The event was a joint initiative with Facebook CMO, Gary Briggs, and members of the US Marketing College, and included 50 representatives from NGOs and government organizations from 15 countries across Europe.

The Marketing College faculty created the training curriculum for NGOs with sessions on Digital Marketing, Understanding Your Audience, Persuasion, Youth Marketing, Crisis Marketing, and the ABCDEs of Communication Strategy. Facebook experts also presented on Facebook Best Practices for creating effective counterspeech and provided an overview of our content policies and global counterspeech efforts. In addition, our partner organization, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, led a session on counterspeech best practices.

Representing countries ranging from the UK, Germany, Finland, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and many more, the training covered issues such as integrating refugees, increasing empathy for LGBTQ families, and preventing radicalization of youth.

The groups brought diverse perspectives to the conversations we had over the two days of the training. The participants not only appreciated the opportunity to meet NGOs from across Europe, but also valued the depth of the trainings and ability to work on their ideas. Additionally, each organization that attended was offered Facebook ad credits to help them reach a wider audience on Facebook and Instagram, and the entire group was connected via a Facebook group so that they can continue sharing ideas.
