Encouraging “Hate Free Zones” online and offline

The Youth for Development campaign traveled to six secondary schools within the Kisumu region to discuss the importance of positive identity formation with 14-18 year old students in an effort to reduce their vulnerability to hate speech and radicalization online. The team aspired to increase community coexistence by breaking boundaries of political, cultural, and religious perceptions by promoting their “Hate Free Zones.” At these in-person lectures, attendees were invited to share their opinions, beliefs, and address the challenges they face. Students were encouraged to learn from one another's differing perspectives; additionally, they were encouraged to behave online with the same respectful tone as modeled in the sessions.
